All adverts so far

TV adverts (Video here) Sponsored adverts
Here are all four sequences so far, I am quite pleased with the progress that I have made. However there are still things that are incomplete that I need to work on such as adding sound to all of my adverts. Over the past few days I have been working on adding sound to all of my sequences and am very happy with my progress. I left adding sound to my adverts as one of the last things to do to my sequences because I thought it would be easier to include sound when I have all my footage all there to work with.

Web pop up

Here is my web pop up advertising my perfume to audiences using the internet, I used Adobe Flash CS3 to create this short sequence- I also used Adobe Photoshop CS3 to create these images and title. I am overall very pleased with the design it's simple but looks very effective - I carried out the same design from my TV advertisments with this web pop up. Before I created this piece I did a lot of research into real webpop ups which advertise perfume to get a better idea of what I needed to do in order to create a successful piece of work. If I could change anything this piece I would perhaps create more tree branches in the background to make it look a lot more interesting.

Sound research

Here are some real perfume adverts that thought were interesting, I selected these as they are similar to my own productions in terms of the fairy tale theme.

For all of my sequences I have decided to include

The sequence opens with a diagetic chiming sound coming from the snow globe, the then advert includes non-diagetic music and a voice over towards the end.

throughout the sequence the protagonist sings along with the music, this is unusual for a perfume advert and is not normally done- however I thought it a very interesting idea, as it helps us to engage with the character a lot more.

This advert opens with non-diagetic music and includes some diagetic ambience sounds, I really like this use of ambience sound as it helps the sequence to seem a lot more realistic.

Ancillary text...

For my Ancillary text I want to create a website pop up to advertise my piece, I decided to choose this choice of ancillary text because I believe this will be the one that I will work the best in. With the experience that I have through softwares such as photoshop, premier pro and flash I believe I could create a successful piece of work. To begin creating this piece of work I want to begin researching real website popups and look at the typical conventions that are used - in order to make my own piece look to be as successful.

Here is an advert on the website Youtube which I though was really interesting...

From this useful research it helped me pick up on a lot of typical features in web advertsing - this then helped me to think of ideas for my own web pop up. Here are some initial ideas/ designs and a story board that I would like my webpop up to look like.

Here are some of the ideas that I had created that to help me come up with a final design for my web pop up, out of all the designs I really like the tree branch design overall and I may use this for my final idea.

Here is my final storyboard/design for my web popup...

Radio Advertising research

Similar to TV advertising radio stations also have adverts play during the breaks.
However Radio adverts are very different to the adverts we see on TV, we cannot view adverts of the radio visually so there needs to be alot more talking so that the audience can understand and engage with what is being advertised to them.

Radio advertisments normally include a lot more information about the product or sevice than a TV advert - in order for the audience to understand. As it can be a lot more difficult to sell a product/ service via radio, they tend to try to make the advert very entertaining to listen to. To do this they generally use catchy songs and comedy as a way of getting the audience to pay attention and engage with the advert.

Weekend filming

Over the weekend both Saturday and Sunday I did filming for both my Ancillary text and my second advertisement. Reflecting back I think it went very well due to the fact that I got all the filming finished that I wanted to get done. Over the time that I have been filming I can see a large improvement and I have learnt so much - I have become a lot more confident director, I have been able to project my voice and overall made the instructions clearer for the actors to understand my instructions. Because of these improvements I have found filming a lot more easier and much more enjoyable, also with more experience it also helps to get more filming done than I used to when I first started filming. However if I could go back and change anything I would perhaps get more variety of shots for my ancillary text because I don't feel that I ticked all the boxes in that area.

I am still in the process of editing my adverts and they will all be up on my blog someday this week.

Designs

Here is a rough idea of what I want to have at the end of my advertisement sequence.

1)

Here is where the sequence finishes, a centralized shot of the product

2)

Gradually the background will fade to white leaving the product still visible.

3)

The name of the product 'Enchanted' then appears

Rough cut presentation

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uM65wffwbhI

Feed back:

1) For this to be my final cut I will need to include sound

I want to include both ambience sound and non-diagetic music, this means that I need to start researching and looking for sound for this sequence.

2) This cut is still far too long to be an advert and needs to be trimmed a lot more

Fifth shooting

This weekend saturday I re-filmed scenes for the first advert which I weren't happy with. To do this I needed to keep with the same continuity of the original film, I made sure that the costumes and hair styles were the same, and the location was the same. I re-shot the scene where the girl looks up at the apple in the tree and also the close up of the apple on the tree branch. I Also re-shot the scene where the prince takes the apple from the tree then gives it to the girl. I am very happy with the new footage as I believe that they will improve my advert, however I believe that I could of got a lot more footage done by experimenting with different ideas.

Ancillary text storyboard

Here is my ancillary text story board, this particular piece will be for my two sponsorship adverts which would go before and after a TV show. I wanted to keep the sponsored adverts similar to my first two main adverts as I would want the audience to recognize the product. However these adverts are a lot shorter than the two main adverts which is what sponsorship adverts require.

Ad 1 second draft video

If the video is not working follow the link below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jjvMBaJCtA

After my Media studies teacher watched this sequence I then got he feedback that I needed to improve this first draft...

- Remove shot one

- shorten shot two

- shot three is fine

- Remove shot of the perfume in the tree and re-shoot it

- remove shot five

- shorten shot six

-shot seven is fine

- shot eight is fine

- shot ten could be shorter

- Remove shot of the prince and re-shoot it ( lewis needs to be looking into the camera with a smile on his face, as if he is looking at the princess so this could be a p.o.v shot)

- shot twelve is fine

- shot thirteen is too slow, speed it up a bit

after the fade out to white at the end there needs to be the perfume title and the remaining image of the product.

Homework: Improved blog post

Originally I planned to film over the Christmas break however there was another repeat of bad weather due to the snow and found it difficult to get to the location and to gather the two actors. Fortunately the snow cleared near the end of the holidays and I could finally film what I needed. I also filmed over this weekend to finish what I started. The filming went quite well; one problem that I faced was directing the actors. They had trouble hearing me and understanding exactly what to. However over time I gradually got the hang of directing and things ran a lot smoothly. I learnt that I needed to project my voice much louder and clearer for the actors to understand, I needed to give more step-by-step instructions rather than just on the spot instructions as this created a lot of confusion before hand. Another problem which I faced was getting the actors to start acting then stopping, again this was my own fault as I needed to be a lot more clear and organised.

I am very pleased that I have finished filming and editting my first advert, how ever this is my first draft as I may need to develop it further. Over the next following weekend I will start shooting my the second advert.

Homework: Improved blog post

After completing both of my animatics they were then watched and reviewed by both my media studies teacher and peers. Their first reactions was that they were impressed with the drawings and how it was presented, they also commented on the fairy tale theme and that they thought it really worked. The only few problems that they had with the animatics was that they were both far too similar, that I needed to think more carefully about the narrative because it would have an effect on what messages I would try to deliver about the perfume itself. They also mentioned that I needed to include sound, I explained that I was in the progress of looking into what I would do with sound. I will need to look for what music I will use in my adverts, some of the best websites that I can search for ideal music are http://www.apple.com/itunes/whats-on/ and http://www.youtube.com/. With youtube I will research different perfume adverts with music which would be ideal for my own advert. Then using itunes I could search and buy my chosen music for my advert. Overall I am pleased with the two animatics that I have created, I learnt from the comments how my animatics are clear and well presented which I am very pleased about as it is important for the audience to be able to sit back and understand whats happening on screen. However looking back on the two sequences and relfecting back to the comments made there are also many improvements that could be made.

After the animatics were reviewed I immediately started to think about how I could improve these adverts ideas.
  1. I may start re storyboard a new idea for the second animatic as it was too similar to the first sequence
  2. I will look into sound, research different perfume advertisement to get ideas
  3. I also need to think about the sponsorship sequence that I am going to create
  4. whilst re story boarding the second sequence I need to think more carefully about narrative, also camera angles and movements.

Research: perfume name

I have decided to go with the name 'Enchanted' for my product as I believe that this name suits the perfume over all the other names I came up with. I believe the name really fits that fairy tale theme that I wanted to have. The definition of the word Enchanted itself means " influenced as by charms or incantations" or "Charmed, delighted, enraptured; Under the influence of enchantment", again this theme of magic and charms relates back to the fairytale theme.

This perfume poster advertising Britney Spear's fragrance 'Hidden fantasy' carries out the same similar style of font style and layout which I would like to portray for my own advertisement.

Women's perfume titles are normally presented in serif font, this is because serif font can be angelic and feminine which fits in with the idea of the perfume being aimed for women.

Here are some examples of different fonts styles for well known perfumes. I want to achieve a similar style of serif font for the name of the perfume in the advertisement.

I particularly like the font
for the perfume 'fantasy' and 'freedom'. They are look very traditional which would fit in with the fairy tale theme in my ad. These fonts are very feminine which would fit very well as my perfume is targeted for women.

Here are my designs for what I would want the font for my title to look like, as you can see I have experimented with five different fonts. I believe I like the first and fourth font the best as it seems to fit that feminine look.

Initial ideas: name of perfume

Whilst trying to come up with a name for my perfume I have been trying to stick to the fairy tale theme. For inspiration I have been looking through fairy tale story books such as Snow White and Cinderella as they are both very similar to my ad. Here are some potential names for my perfume that I think could work.

Happily Ever After

Forever

Enchanted

Upon A Time

Fairy tale

Charming

Once Upon a Time

Enchanting

Romantic

Ancillary text: What is a web banner?

A web banner or banner ad is a form of advertising on the World Wide Web. This form of online advertising entails embedding an advertisement into a web page. It is intended to attract traffic to a website by linking to the website of the advertiser. The advertisement is constructed from an image (GIF, JPEG, PNG), JavaScript program or multimedia object employing technologies such as Java, Shockwave or Flash, often employing animation, sound, or video to maximize presence. Images are usually in a high-aspect ratio shape (i.e. either wide and short, or tall and narrow) hence the reference to banners. These images are usually placed on web pages that have interesting content, such as a newspaper article or an opinion piece. Affiliates earn money usually on a CPC (cost per click) basis. For every unique user click on the ad, the affiliate earns money.

The web banner is displayed when a web page that references the banner is loaded into a web browser. This event is known as an "impression". When the viewer clicks on the banner, the viewer is directed to the website advertised in the banner. This event is known as a "click through". In many cases, banners are delivered by a central ad server.

Here is an example of a typical website banner...

Updated Locations

As I mentioned in my previous post I decided to change my location, here are some images of the new location that I decided to use for my first ad.

*images here*

Fourth shooting

This weekend both saturday and sunday I filmed the second draft of my first ad. I have made quite a few changes to the last ad such as; I decided to change my location to a different part of the forest, the reason I did this was because the last location looked a lot more public than I planned as I originally wanted it to look like it was deep in the forest. I really like the new location as it is a lot more pleasant and greener than the last one, perfect for a fairy tale scene.

Another change that I made was getting more shots of the characters, last time I learnt that I didn't have enough shots of the characters faces which was important as I would want the audience engage with the characters on screen. This time I achieved this and I learnt whilst shooting that there was a lot more emotion shown through these shots which I really liked.

I believe my directing has improved a lot as things ran a lot more smoothly this time, hopefully these skills will improve as the time goes on. Overall it was a quite successful shoot, I didn't get as much filming done as I would have liked to but I am still pleased with what i achieved. As for the video itself I am still in the progress of editing it today, it should hopefully be ready by tonight and up on the next blog post.

Third shooting

This weekend I had planned to do some more filming for my first advert, how ever my main actress Vicky had pulled a hamstring meaning and was unable to walk. As my film required her to walk we had to cancel the filming and move it to the following weekend. We agreed that we would cover both this Saturday and Sunday to catch up with the filming that we had to cancel the weekend just gone.

Advert one (First draft)

Here is my first draft of my first advert:

After my Media studies teacher watched this sequence I then got he feedback that I needed to improve this first draft...

- I need to have close ups of the characters faces, otherwise the audience won't have any real connection with the characters

- Continuity...

e.g. the scene where the prince is grabbing the apple from the tree he is using his right hand, the next shot he has it in his left hand.

- I need to make the cuts and shots flow much better, some scenes are much too slow and some are quicker than they need to be

- I need to include music, the music must fit in with whats happening on screen

- At the end of some scenes the screen goes black from where I had stopped the film on the camera...

This has helped me to understand how to improve my filming, I need the keep the camera running a few more seconds after the scene is filming.
